Zeitwinkel: appreciating the value of time

Zeitwinkel is an independent Swiss watchmaking brand that creates handcrafted timepieces with automatic manufacture movements. It was founded by three friends who are still as passionate about appreciating and preserving time as they were in 2006.

When our founders started their journey, a key part of their motivation was to build watches they would want to wear themselves. Convinced that time is the most precious commodity of all, they firmly believed that their watch would have to reflect that exceptional value.

First and foremost, it meant that no shortcuts could be taken in the creation of a Zeitwinkel watch. Starting with the three-year development of our manufacture movements, we always prioritized adding true value to our watches over investing into marketing or branding.

The countless hours spent at the bench by our watchmakers are preserved in every timepiece that leaves our workshop in Saint-Imier. We know that our watches will witness many important moments on the wrist of their owners and we think it’s only fitting that we invest a lot of our time into creating them. That’s the essence of what our founders intended when they decided to build watches “for themselves”.

Watchmaking craftsmanship at the highest level

We consider ourselves one of the custodians of traditional watchmaking. For us, it's not about distinguishing ourselves from perfectly good industrially manufactured watches, but rather about preserving watchmaking as a living craft. This commitment is expressed in every detail of a Zeitwinkel watch.

Each Zeitwinkel movement and watch are assembled by hand by our watchmakers, resulting in a very limited number of watches we can build each year. We spend countless hours finishing and decorating the movement components, aiming for perfection rather than economies of scale.

Where precision is essential, we also use modern CNC machines. Yet for many steps in the process, our watchmakers prefer machines from the 1960s and 1970s for their character and consistency in achieving excellent results. And last but not least, we are proud that most of our elaborate movement decorations are done by hand.

So, wherever reasonably possible, our founders forego the cheaper or faster automated solution in favor of the slower, handmade alternative. They prefer to see the visible traces of time spent by an artisan on a component rather than the marks of an automated manufacturing center.

No more than 100 watches per year

With our current watchmaking capacity, we can create about one hundred Zeitwinkel movements and thus only one hundred watches every year. This is due to the deliberate design of our beautiful manufacture calibers in such a way that their production cannot be automated. It also means that we can only expand our manufacturing capacity very cautiously.

With only such a small number of timepieces manufactured, our watchmakers can focus on every single watch. In fact, the characteristic traces of each of our watchmakers serve as a lasting testimony of the time spent by the artisan.

Zeitwinkel watches are available with case diameters of 39mm, 40.5mm or 42.5mm and always feature one of our automatic German Silver movements. They embody the essence of our passion for watchmaking and are therefore reserved exclusively for Zeitwinkel timepieces.

If you would like to commission your personal Zeitwinkel timepiece, we invite you to contact us directly at the manufacture in Switzerland or through one of our points of sale. We also collaborate with a few carefully selected partners worldwide who take independent watchmaking very seriously and often specialize exclusively in watches beyond the well-known corporate brands.
