Discover our bestselling watch – the Zeitwinkel 273° Saphir Fumé

Meet the Zeitwinkel 273° Saphir Fumé – not only our bestselling timepiece, but also a watch that captures the essence of our watchmaking philosophy. With its transparent smoked sapphire dial, this exceptional watch highlights what we are all about: traditional artisan watchmaking craftsmanship and our own inhouse movements.

Just like every Zeitwinkel movement, the ZW0103 manufacture caliber is unique to our watches. It is built in our workshop in Saint-Imier by our own watchmakers with precision, reliability and longevity in mind. We believe that the level of hand-finishing and its meticulous artisan decoration deserve as much attention as the exceptional design of the 273° Saphir Fumé.

With its mesmerizing dial, the 273° Saphir Fumé unmistakably carries the DNA of a classic and elegant Zeitwinkel timepiece. Its dial is perfectly balanced with the large date at the “11” position opposite the 72 hours power reserve indicator. This harmonic design provides the frame for what makes this watch special: our patented large-date caliber ZW0103.

The 273° Saphir Fumé is more than suitable for any formal occasions, yet cool enough to stay on the wrist for the rest of the day.

The heart of the Zeitwinkel 273° Saphir Fumé:

Our patented large-date caliber ZW0103

If we could highlight just one special feature of the 273° Saphir Fumé, it would be our ZW0103 manufacture movement. The ZW0103 is an expression of our founders’ passion for traditional watchmaking and took three years of initial development. The exceptional mechanism of the ZW0103 consists of an automatic winding movement with a semi-integrated complication for the large date display.

We developed it especially for our 273° series watches and craft it in small series in our workshop in the heart of the Swiss Jura. In contrast to mass-produced alternatives, we use a unique mix of high precision machinery to manufacture the raw parts and traditional watchmaking methods to finish them. The machines used for finishing are sometimes older than our founders and require skilled watchmakers to operate them.

When we constructed our movements, our focus was on precision and serviceability. This meant using very solid bridges instead of aiming for the thinnest possible caliber. It also led us to use a solid three-quarter plate which reduces flexing and unwanted play. This commitment to structural integrity requires extreme precision during assembly—performed entirely by hand by our watchmakers.

Starting with our proprietary Zeitwinkel caliber ZW0102 as a basis, we added a specially developed complication for displaying the remaining running time and the date. For the large date mechanism at the 11 o' clock position, Zeitwinkel was granted a patent.

The movement has the substantial diameter of 30.4 mm, 49 bearing jewels, a total of 387 components, a frequency of 28,800 oscillations, a Glucydur balance and a very reactive, bi-directional automatic winding mechanism. The total running time of the movement is 72 hours. So much for the technical aspects.

But we put just as much emphasis on the esthetics of our movements as on their functionality. All plates and bridges of the base caliber as well as of the semi-integrated date complication are made of uncoated German Silver. This material is considerably harder than the brass normally used and requires the highest precision in manufacturing and decoration.

German Silver, an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc, has a beautiful color that develops a light but very warm patina if left uncoated. It will however develop spots if touched with bare fingers and obviously, any mistakes that happen during the handling or decoration of the movement cannot be covered up.

At least 75% of the work on the ZW0103 takes place only after all the parts have been manufactured. We assemble everything, including the smallest components, by hand and then decorate even the undersides and areas the owner of a Zeitwinkel watch will never see.

If you were to disassemble the movement of your Zeitwinkel watch, you would find anglage (chamfering), black polishing, Geneva stripes, straight lining and perlage in different sizes. For more on these techniques and how our watchmakers apply them like they would have done fifty years ago, check out our section on movements and our regular blog posts.

More than just a dial: technical art

The dial of our 273° Saphir Fumé has often been described as “stunning” or “cool”.  Hardly anyone notices how technically complex it is and how long it takes to manufacture it.

They undergo a complex process of about twenty manufacturing steps. It starts with a sapphire plate that receives a layer of metal salts in a plasma oven. Unlike a lacquer, this ensures that the transparency of the dial adapts with changing light conditions – from nearly fully transparent to dark grey.

The next major step is the metallization of the outer ring under the minute track (“minuterie”). This allows a precise reading of the time regardless of the light condition and possible reflections from the German Silver of the movement.

The most interesting and unique process however is the creation of the indices, the logo, the “window frame” of the large date and the power reserve scale on the extremely hard sapphire crystal. Everything seen on the front of the dial is created by means of a lithographic electroplating process called “LIGA”. It ensures a solid connection and high precision for additional depth from every angle.

The hour and minute hands of the 273° Saphir Fumé are precisely matched to the indices of the sapphire dial. They are diamond-set, which means they have two straight surfaces that are set at an angle to each other over almost the entire length of the hand. As a result, one side always reflects the incident light, creating a strong contrast with the dial.

The patented date display is constructed to advance by one day at midnight, requiring manual correction only in months that are shorter than 31 days. Thanks to a quick-set function accessible via the second crown position, updating the date is effortless—ensuring your watch remains accurate and always ready to use.

The stainless steel case of the Zeitwinkel 273° Saphir Fumé

Every detail of the Zeitwinkel 273° Saphir Fumé case is purposefully crafted to complement the in-house ZW0103 manufacture movement it protects. The striking interplay of polished surfaces and finely textured details gives every Zeitwinkel case its unmistakable character and presence.

It is constructed of 1.4435 steel alloy which has a high resistance to intercrystalline corrosion and non-oxidized acids, so it is particularly suited for products that are in continuous contact with skin.

To achieve its signature contours, each watch case is manufactured using precision machinery. After that, the construction is completed primarily by hand. In this process, 26 parts are assembled in more than 80 individual steps.

With a diameter of 42.5 mm, the 273° Saphir Fumé offers a bold silhouette that remains elegantly balanced on the wrist. Its downward-sloping lugs ensure a comfortable and proportionate fit, enhancing both wearability and visual harmony. The case is water resistant up to a tested pressure of five bar.

Original Zeitwinkel straps – the ideal match for your watch

We offer the option of either an alligator pattern embossed calf leather strap or a natural caoutchouc strap for our model 273° Saphir Fumé. And of course, this watch will also look great with many other types of straps that can be purchased from strap specialists!

Our calf leather straps

For our leather straps, only hand-selected skins are processed and refined with the traditional full-bugg technique. The result is a supple and extremely durable strap available in various colors. For animal welfare reasons, we completely abstain from using reptile leather and replace it by high-quality hand-sewn calfskin.

The exclusive use of vegetable colorants, antiallergic leather as well as caoutchouc-based glues provide for excellent skin friendliness and pleasant wear. Our Zeitwinkel folding clasp is made of antiallergic stainless steel 316L and can easily be opened and closed with one hand, while at the same time being as easily adjustable as a pin buckle.

For our model 273° Saphir Fumé, we recommend a leather strap in either black, medium grey or burgundy red.

Our natural caoutchouc straps

As an alternative to our leather straps, the 273° Saphir Fumé can also be ordered with our durable caoutchouc watch strap. Caoutchouc has proven to be very skin-friendly and extremely durable not only for the use in warmer climates, but also during more athletic activities. It is waterproof, UV-resistant, tearproof and dimensionally stable.

We have designed this antiallergic strap from scratch from natural caoutchouc, free from harmful substances so solid that it does not bulge even when worn for a longer period of time. The Zeitwinkel logos which are embossed on the inner side of the strap provide for a better ventilation of the skin and improve wear comfort.

The Zeitwinkel caoutchouc watch strap is closed with a high precision manufactured folding clasp made of polished stainless steel 316L that can be opened and closed with one hand. It is necessary to cut the strap to the length of the wrist, which can easily be done by the owner or a local watch specialist.

Please note that the folding clasp for the leather straps and caoutchouc straps are not interchangeable.
